UV Disinfection: Flow and Pretreatment Considerations

UV disinfection equipment should be selected for its documented duty and the water conditions at the UV inlet. For a Sabah installation, the flow and upstream treatment arrangement matter. UV is a distinct process function and should not be treated as a substitute for every filtration or dissolved-constituent requirement.

Review the exact equipment specification

Ask for the selected model’s rated conditions, water-quality requirements and monitoring provisions. Confirm how it is integrated into the water path and how operators respond to alarms or faults. Different product classes and configurations have different intended duties. Do not make a broad disinfection claim from the presence of a UV lamp alone.

UV duty must match the water reaching the chamber

A UV disinfection stage should be selected using its documented treatment duty, rated conditions and inlet-water requirements. Check the intended flow and how upstream treatment supports that duty. Monitoring and alarm response belong in the operating plan. Water stored or distributed after the UV stage needs separate consideration; a lamp does not describe every aspect of the complete water system.

A selection mistake to avoid

UV is not a dissolved-salt removal stage. Assign filtration, membrane treatment and disinfection their appropriate roles in the proposal.

Which UV equipment categories does SWFI list?

The industrial catalogue includes Aqualight Ultraviolet Disinfection System and Atlantic Ultraviolet equipment. Confirm the exact model and operating limits for the application.

Planning the enquiry in Sabah

SWFI lists UV equipment and UV system applications. Include the feed information, required flow and any storage or distribution after the treatment stage. Allow access for the maintenance specified by the manufacturer. Retain equipment identity, operating records and service dates so the UV stage can be reviewed alongside the rest of the treatment system.

Information to prepare

Does UV remove dissolved salts?

No. UV disinfection and dissolved-salt reduction are different duties. Additional treatment may be needed for the application.
