Match media to the process
A media name does not describe the complete filter performance. Grade, particle size, bed arrangement, flow and backwashing requirements all matter. Substituting one material for another can change the hydraulic behaviour of the vessel. Ask for the relevant datasheet and confirm that the proposed media is intended for the treatment objective.
Choose filtration media by treatment function
A media bed is part of a defined process. Particle-filtration media, activated carbon and ion-exchange resin should not be treated as interchangeable materials. Select the duty first, then the grade, bed arrangement and vessel. In a multimedia filter, the proposed layers and support arrangement need to be designed together. The available backwash supply is an essential part of that decision.
| Requirement | What to compare | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Sand or multimedia | Review particle and turbidity duty | Confirm grading, bed and backwash conditions |
| Activated carbon | Review the specified adsorption or chlorine duty | Confirm grade and relevant performance checks |
| Ion-exchange resin | Review hardness or ionic-purity duty | Confirm resin type and regeneration arrangement |
A selection mistake to avoid
Adding several different materials to one vessel does not automatically create a suitable multi-stage process. Each material must be compatible with the intended arrangement.
What should a filter-media quotation identify?
The exact product and grade, required quantity, intended bed arrangement and whether removal, internal inspection, loading and commissioning are included.
Published SWFI project example in Sabah
SWFI’s published Nexus Resort & Spa Karambunai case describes media replacement in an existing stainless-steel filter serving an underground-water supply in Sabah. The documented work uses a multilayer media arrangement selected for the site requirement. It provides a local example of assessing the vessel and treatment duty before planning media renewal.
Planning the enquiry in Sabah
When replacing an existing bed, provide the vessel dimensions, current media records and service history. Include the available backwash supply and drainage arrangement. SWFI’s catalogue includes several media categories, so an enquiry can be reviewed against the actual duty. Do not treat a media replacement as a solution to pump, valve or distribution faults without inspection.
Information to prepare
- Water analysis and treatment objective
- Vessel size and current media arrangement
- Service flow, backwash supply and drainage
Can media be selected from water colour alone?
Colour is an observation, not a complete analysis. The appropriate process depends on the constituents present and the required treatment result.
