Multimedia Filter Backwashing and Drainage Planning

Backwashing needs to be planned as an operating mode of a multimedia filter. A Sabah installation should have a suitable water supply and discharge arrangement for the selected bed and vessel. A filter that operates at service flow may still have insufficient provisions for its cleaning mode.

Review the cleaning duty separately

Use the equipment and media documentation to establish the required backwash conditions. Check the pump, pipework, valve arrangement and drain route against those requirements. Clarify how backwashing affects water availability elsewhere in the facility. Where several filters share infrastructure, consider the operating sequence and any simultaneous demand.

Backwashing is a separate hydraulic duty

A multimedia filter can operate at its service flow while still having inadequate provisions for cleaning. Review the selected bed’s backwash requirements with the pump, valve and drainage arrangement. The cleaning sequence should also account for the facility’s water use at that time. Where several filters share a supply, define the operating sequence rather than assuming they can all clean simultaneously.

A selection mistake to avoid

The service-flow figure should not be substituted for the required backwash flow. Use the specification for the actual media and equipment.

What supports a backwash troubleshooting enquiry?

Vessel dimensions, media records, pressure and flow observations, the valve identity and photographs or drawings of the supply and discharge routes.

Planning the enquiry in Sabah

Provide SWFI with vessel dimensions, media records and the available flow and pressure information. Include photographs or drawings of the drainage route. For an existing filter with reduced performance, retain pressure readings and backwash observations to support the assessment. Agree on the checks after cleaning or media renewal so the filter’s return to service is documented.

Information to prepare

Can the service-flow figure be used as the backwash requirement?

Not automatically. Service and backwash are different duties. Confirm the required values for the selected arrangement.
