Plan the bed and its service duty
Review the selected grade, vessel arrangement, flow and operating conditions. The replacement decision should account for the treatment objective and available performance records, rather than media age alone. Ask how the relevant inlet and outlet conditions will be checked. Where carbon is used ahead of another process, clarify the water quality that downstream equipment requires.
Activated carbon grade and treatment objective belong together
Activated carbon is reviewed for a defined adsorption or chlorine-reduction duty. Its form, grade and bed arrangement influence how it is used. Granular carbon in a vessel and powdered carbon in a different process are not automatically interchangeable. Establish the constituent to be addressed, the flow and the relevant performance checks before deciding on a replacement or a new stage.
| Requirement | What to compare | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Granular carbon bed | Review the selected grade and vessel duty | Plan loading, service flow and commissioning |
| Specific reduction requirement | Review documented suitability for the target | Use relevant inlet and outlet checks |
| Replacement assessment | Review use, performance and system condition | Do not use age as the only decision input |
A selection mistake to avoid
Do not describe carbon as a universal purifier. Its documented treatment function is different from RO separation or a disinfection stage.
What distinction matters when ordering carbon?
Identify the exact grade and form, the intended treatment duty and the vessel or process arrangement. A product name alone may not establish the correct replacement.
Planning the enquiry in Sabah
SWFI lists coconut-shell granular activated carbon and other filtration products. Provide the existing media identity, vessel size and reason for replacement. Include maintenance access and the planned shutdown. Confirm the required flushing or commissioning procedure from the supplied documentation and retain the post-service readings for future review.
Information to prepare
- Target constituent and documented media duty
- Vessel, flow and downstream requirements
- Replacement scope and commissioning records
Does carbon filtration perform the same duty as RO?
No. Their functions differ. Select each stage according to the constituents and treatment result required.
